Metal pollution in rivers and canals poses a significant threat to wildlife and the delicate ecosystems they inhabit. Beautiful freshwater habitats, which are home to an abundance of wildlife, are suffering due to agricultural waste, raw sewage, and pollution from abandoned mines. A recent report commissioned by environmental charities, including The Wildlife Trusts, the RSPB, and the National Trust, highlights the severity of the issue. In England, only 14% of rivers meet standards for good ecological status, while less than half achieve these standards in Wales. Northern Ireland fares slightly better, with 31% of water bodies classified as good or high quality. However, the poor health of many waterways impacts nature, leading to species decline and even extinction. Iconic and threatened species like otters, swallowtail butterflies, and salmon depend on these water bodies, but widespread pollution has devastated their habitats.
It’s crucial that we take urgent action to protect our freshwater ecosystems, which are not only essential for wildlife but also part of our heritage and cultural identity. Additionally, metal pollution from historical sources, such as heavy metals in canal silt, continues to affect water quality and wildlife.
